๐Ÿ“… Thought for today:

โ€˜The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own. You do not blame them on your mother, the ecology, or the president. You realize that you control your own destiny.โ€™

Albert Ellis has been an inspiration for me in my work as a therapist & counsellor.

One of the six models of psychotherapy I was taught was CBT – cognitive behavioural therapy.

I accept that the NHS has decided to focus on CBT, I think because it is short, ticks a box and there is good evidence that it is effective.

Yet there is good evidence that virtually all models are effective, and to the same level, about 70%.

This of course depends on how you measure effective – and who measures it,

I was interested in the basic ideas and went off and had training in REBT – Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy.

This was developed by Albert Ellis, and to my mind, and my way of operating, is less rigid allowing flexibility in my practice.

It is human nature to look for a “cause” for whatever we are experiencing right now – and in some cases, the cause seems obvious.

Yet when we really dig into this we often find that the event does not cause the feeling – we do – and that is within our control.

I’m doing a bit of this thinking myself this morning, taking control of how I feel about something.
