Thought for today:
‘Nothing in the world is harder than candour, and nothing is easier than flattery.’

The topic of candour in business has surfaced many times in recent weeks.
Today I have been pondering candour (candor) after reading a book called Radical Candor by Kim Scott.
I think it is a useful book, rare amongst business books for being worth reading completely.
Personally, I prefer the term compassionate candor.
I can always tell those who have read the book, because that is in essence what Scott proposes.
Those that think it means being brutally honest (I have met a few), haven’t read the book.
What brought this to mind was a column in The Times about no longer making excuses for not going to social events.
Personally, I think we will keep doing it out of a desire to not be offensive, seeing it as a kindness.
I think this is a clear case of what is right in the workplace is not necessarily right at home.
