I worked with two different leadership teams this week on self-awareness.
We covered some theories (I am a big fan of Dr Tasha Eurich) and tried out some exercises in self-awareness, including the Johari Window.
I love that the Johari Window wounds like it is from the mystical east when in fact it was developed by two psychologists called JOseph and HARRIngton – hence JO-HARRI which became Johari.
It is a model for exploring internal and external self-awareness.
There is usually someone in the class who says, “I didn’t learn anything new from that exercise”, and you can’t help wondering if that is true.
Hence this quote.
Hand-in-hand with self-awareness is self-regulation of emotions in particular, but also behaviour.
For managers, this is one of the key elements that differentiates the leader from the manager.
I have heard so many stories of “under-pressure” managers going “nuclear” with employees, that I have a book project called Toxic Management sitting on my to-do list.
