📅 Thought for today:

‘Communism is a monopolistic system, economically and politically. The system suppresses individual initiative, and the 21st century is all about individualism and freedom. The development of technology supported these directions.’

I wonder how many people remember this man’s name? One of the most important and influential people of the late 20th Century. He was Time magazine’s person of the year in 1981 and one of their 100 most important people of the 20th Century.

His trade union, Solidarność, or to give it its full name in English, Independent Self-Governing Trade Union “Solidarity”, transformed politics in Poland, an event that had a domino effect on central European governments. A process that started in a shipyard in Gdansk, the one in the photograph.

I was actually thinking today about individualism, and how it scares so many people. There is safety in conformity and selfishness in individualism. Joe Biden is opposed to individualism.

Yet the right to express ourselves in our own way is most strongly felt by the generation of people roughly under the age of 35. If their parents and grandparents fought for an end to dictatorships and fascism, how can they best exploit this newfound freedom than by expressing themselves as they feel, by embodying their emotions?

This meandering chain of thought all started with my personal refusal to wear a tie or to attend any event that thinks “black tie” as a dress code is relevant in the 21st Century!
