It is in our nature as humans to seek patterns and meaning in all that happens to us.
I see it when a manager on a training course asks me for a process chart for his duties.
If this happens then do that.
As if that’s what makes a good manager.
If something bad happens we ask, “Why?”, or sometimes, “Why me?”.
We don’t believe coincidence can happen as often as it does.
We want there to be meaning and purpose – we really don’t want to be non-player characters in the world we call our own.
So it is only natural we look for someone to “blame”.
The alternative is too much to bear – there is no meaning.
We have no control, only influence, the only thing we truly control is ourselves.
