đŸ“… Thought for today:

‘Sometimes the poor are praised for being thrifty. But to recommend thrift to the poor is both grotesque and insulting. It is like advising a man who is starving to eat less.’

— Oscar Wilde

Do you expect your standard of living to at least stay the same over the months and years?

With all the hoopla around technological advances making our lives easier, have you noticed what has happened to the cost of living? Self-driving cars, personal jetpacks, billionaire trips to space; not putting food on the table or saving energy are they?

Have corporate profits been reduced to zero such that we all have to pull together, or are the consumers being asked to bear the brunt of cost increases?

The newspapers this morning were full of suggestions for how to reduce our energy usage.

Now, I come from an era when central heating didn’t exist – yes the frost did appear on the inside of my bedroom window some winter mornings and I learned to close all doors and sleep under many layers (no duvet either).

But is returning to this what we have all been working towards collectively?

Is asking people on low incomes, who cannot afford a home or good food, to reduce their consumption so they can make ends meet the right answer?

Is this the modern society we all dreamt of?
