I ended up with a Frank Zappa quote and that makes me smile.
Zappa was a non-conformist, outspoken, and sometimes, outrageous. Had he lived in these times, I am sure there would have been fireworks on social media, he was not afraid to express an opinion or criticise.
I was actually thinking about how we simply don’t seem to change people’s minds, yet there is a well-known strategy for doing so.
If you walk up to a door with the word “PULL” on it, and try and push it, what happens?
Being curious is the answer to understanding someone else’s point of view – genuinely interested so that you might change your mind.
Social media has amplified the door pushing, and very little door pulling goes on. So most people don’t change their minds, they take a position and stick with it.
In just a brief hour this morning, I witnessed people “pushing” when they should be “pulling” all over social media. It is not uplifting and I went and found what I wanted.
Which turned out to be this quote, not that I knew when i started looking.
Frank Zappa died in 1993 – almost 30 years ago, his family announced: “Composer Frank Zappa left for his final tour just before 6:00 pm on Saturday.”
