📅 Thought for today:
‘Every block of stone has a statue inside it, and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.’
— Michelangelo

I have always liked this quote.
I envisage the sculptor “freeing” the statue from the stone, or maybe like an archaeologist digging through layers to find artefacts.
I have described the same feeling at the potter’s wheel – that my journey so far has been one of discovering what is inside the clay – I am not yet good enough (or particularly motivated) to make the same things over and over again.
I wonder though if there is a broader metaphor at work.
Surely inside every child is the solution to some societal problem. As my teacher training progresses (slowly) I wonder about this. I work with adults – I don’t teach children at all – yet I wonder whether we can enable learning for anyone and help them transform themselves?
Every child has all the same ingredients, and Carol Dweck discovered that mindset made an enormous difference to the learning progress of a child.
And every adult, whatever their age or background, has the same raw materials to make whatever they want to make of their lives – they just need to discover their “why?”
