Thought for today:
βIn theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.β

I am often asked which quote is my favourite.
I have used nearly 600 quotes on these daily musings (595 to be precise) and yet I have not, until today, used my favourite.
This is the quote I use the most. Most often that will be when working with leaders and managers in entrepreneurial businesses.
It is particularly true when it comes to management theories – of which there are more than enough already. The theories are often neat, simply expressed, often with a nice diagram. All wrapped up with a bow (so to speak).
Yet the reality of managing people is that it is messy and often doesn’t fit nice, neat pictures.
The same is true in life.
Theories about how we should live our lives – how we should think, feel and be – abound. There is a never-ending stream of self-help books (and I am writing another one).
They tend to tell us what we want to hear or explain our “condition” in terms that make sense and fit our picture of ourselves.
Yet the reality is a different story.
So there you have it, my favourite quote is from the former baseball star and coach of the New York Yankees baseball team. Whilst it is widely believed that Hanna-Barbera named Yogi Bear after him, they denied it. A quick search online will reveal many more Yogi-isms, some will surprise you.
