📅 Thought for today:

‘The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same.’

— Marjane Satrapi

I am a huge fan of graphic novels, comics, and other illustrative narratives.

Marjane Satrapi is an Iranian-born French contemporary graphic novelist, illustrator, animated film director, and children’s book author. Apart from her native tongue Persian, she speaks English, Swedish, German, French and Italian.

Her book “Persepolis” is consistently listed in the top 10’s of all time great comics and graphic novels. It is the story of her childhood and coming of age in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution.

Though I chose her quote – about the differences between the people of nations and their governments – I was actually thinking today of Darryl Cunningham’s book “Putin’s Russia”.

Cunningham is a New York Times graphic journalist, and his book is well researched. I had the pleasure of meeting Darryl last October and getting a signed copy. I already knew his work from “Psychiatric Tales”, a superb graphic guide to psychiatric conditions – something we avoid out of fear yet should all learn a little more about.

I recommend Darryl’s book, I am rereading it today.
