Kamakura Pot

Thought for today:

‘Memory dilutes, but the object remains unaltered.’

In November 2019 I visited Japan for the first time in 25 years.

It is a country I really like and I have many happy memories over the years.

Sitting on my desk is this small, handmade pot.

It is just 6.5cm (2.5in) tall, with a partly rough surface.

It has a feeling of permanence, yet is obviously not permanent.

I can remember clearly buying it, in a small shop in Kamakura.

Yet that memory is fading in a way that the pot is not.

Experience and training have taught me that our memories are fallible and malleable.

What we think is the truth is sometimes just a memory, faded and tinted by time and our experience.
