📅 Thought for today:

‘Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.’

— Diana, Princess of Wales

Have you ever done a kindness and it has gone unnoticed?

Maybe you went the extra mile for a client, your employer, or your boss, and they didn’t acknowledge it in any way. Maybe even repaid your kindness with an unkindness – a harsh word, or an unkind act?

Why should we be kind to people who do not act kindly, who are self-centred or mean?

In moments when these thoughts swirl around in your mind, you can try to separate your expectation from the act.

To be kind in expectation of reward in some form – even something as simple as a word of thanks – undermines your act for you.

So give the gift of kindness, as it is also a gift for you, it reminds you what kind of person you are. And let go of the judgement about whether someone “deserves” kindness – they probably need it whether they realise it or not.

Giving kindness makes us kind, judgement and expectation do not.
