If I say “communicating” do you think talking or listening?

In situations with clients who are managers or leaders of people, I often find myself exploring their beliefs about communication.

“They should know what I want (or mean)”, are words oft spoken by clients.

“They” are not telepathic.

So finding an effective way to communicate is important.

As John Adair said, “Communication is the sister of leadership.”

Communication is not talking though.

It involves a lot of listening.

And listening is not the same as hearing.

Getting better at all of this complicated “stuff” requires practice. We have the basic tools, the equipment if you will.

We just didn’t bother reading the manual. Or notice how many bits of equipment we have.

Two ears and one mouth.
