This is not the kind of expert I would want to become.
I certainly meet experts who have built their profile on knowing things that other people don’t know.
In the age of the Internet, this can be very short-lived.
I also meet experts who take other people’s work and repackage it as new material.
This happened recently when I was on a training course – one expert using another’s expertise for their own purposes.
The definition of an expert is someone with knowledge or skill in a specific area.
It does not have to be unique in any way.
To stay expert then means gaining new knowledge or skills, to have a growth mindset.
Since Truman made this statement the world has changed considerably.
I would say an expert is now the opposite, someone who embraces new learning and experience.
