Thought for today:

‘After all, the best part of a holiday is perhaps not so much to be resting yourself, as to see all the other fellows busy working.’

— Kenneth Grahame

If I had to pick just one book to take to my desert island, it would probably be The Wind In The Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

When I was 8 years old I played Mr Toad in the school play in a fabulous costume made by my mother.

The stories are indelibly imprinted in my memory.

I’ve read the books and some of William Horwood’s sequels.

I can still hear Sir Michael Hordern’s narration of the audiobook.

Mole, ratty, toad and badger feel like childhood friends.

Ratty was of course a water vole, not a ratty.

And not forgetting that Pink Floyd named an album after one of the chapters.

So I was delighted to find a Kenneth Grahame quote that sums up my two weeks off.

And on this holiday in the midst of a lockdown, maybe it sums up your day.

Happy Easter.
